About Us
THE EALING GROCER
The Ealing Grocer opened on Friday 13th November 2020, a true lockdown baby. Owned by Andy Harris and Katie Millard, who both live in Ealing and have long careers working in food businesses. We decided to create our own neighbourhood store supplying our local W5 area with all the best fruit and veg, pantry staples, Traiteur-style prepared foods, perfect charcuterie and cheese, homewares and so much more. Inspired by our various work travels over the years visiting some amazing food shops, eclectic épiceries and delis, street markets, tavernas, trattorias and more.
We sell seasonal fruit and vegetables, freshly baked sourdough breads, focaccia and pastries, all sorts of farmhouse cheeses from around the UK, France, Italy, Spain and Greece – crumbly Cheddars and blues, soft goat’s and cow’s milk cheeses, barrel-aged feta and creamy burrata and mozzarella. We stock all the staples, like eggs, milk and cream, along with a wide range of enticing artisan food items. Everything from Tuscan beans, French lentils and Sardinian fregola, all types of pasta shapes and sauces, a wide range of extra-virgin olive oils and vinegars, sensational spices and herbs, and plenty of Cantabrian seafood – Bonito del Norte, Spring anchovies and garfish (all sustainably caught and hand-packed into jars and tins) and the famed Colatura di Alici (anchovy sauce) that can be used to add umami-like intensity to all sorts of dishes. We love to hand-slice cured meats, such as prosciutto, Mortadella and various salamis on our traditional fly-wheel slicer.
We believe in the mantra that less is often more, and that you’ll always enhance your daily recipes and cooking techniques by using the very best ingredients. Try squeezing the juice and zest from one of our Amalfi lemons into a roast chicken and potato dish, making a salad with some of our stunning radicchios and heirloom tomatoes or adding a splash of one of our exciting artisan vinegars into dressings and sauces, and you’ll see the difference they make immediately.
The shop ethos is simple; to always encourage people to cook with seasonal ingredients, experiment with new flavours and to make the whole connection with food shopping a more joyous and celebratory daily event. We love nothing more than chatting to our customers about the provenance and stories behind our products and to give, and swap, recipe ideas for them along the way.
In the mornings, our kitchen is a hive of activity as Andy cooks the daily specials – soups, stews, salads, sandwiches, pies and meat ragus. We are also passionate about homemade ice cream and Andy makes some celebrated soft serve with diverse flavours such as saffron, melon, mastic, vanilla and sea buckthorn. During the height of the citrus season, we are also busy squeezing fresh Tarocco blood orange, clementine and mandarin juice, perfect for a vitamin C packed hit.
Many of the products are exclusive to our store, imported through Andy’s other business, Vinegar Shed which sells the best vinegars and oils, rare spices and wild peppers to some of the UK’s top chefs.
Great devotees to sustainability and regenerating our planet, we use very little plastics, our veg orders are loose, our bags our paper, our packaging is recycled, biodegradable or plant based. We sell many things by the scoop like dried fruits, dried mushrooms and various beans and pulses. If you bring your own bottle you can even fill it with the best Greek honey or olive oil. We constantly strive to make our shop more environmentally focused, and love customers to bring their own bags if they can. We often sell wonky or bruised fruit and veg half price, so get to know us and you can grab some waste-saving bargains.
Come and visit soon, we can’t wait to meet you.
